Description: Celebrate the Day of the Dead / el Día de los Muertos at the New Brunswick library with a free event open to all ages! The day's activities will begin with Altar Building / Construcción de Altares: everyone is invited to take part in the creation of a collective Day of the Dead altar. Bring fruit, chocolate, bread or flowers for the ofrenda. Write the name of someone you want to remember and honor on a colorful piece of paper. You can bring photos or draw a picture of your deceased relative to take a place at the altar. The facilitators will explain the meaning of each item that is placed on the altar.
The celebration will continue with music and Aztec dance performances by the Calpulli Huehuetlatolli dance troupe. Enjoy reading time, papel picado (paper flower making), a Sugar Skull workshop, and face painting as well. The festivities will close with a sampling of tamales (Mexican appetizers) and champurrado (a chocolate-based Mexican drink).
New Brunswick Free Public Library’s Day of the Dead program includes collaborations with: Lazos America Unida, Rutgers Center for Latino Arts and Culture, Esperanza Neighborhood Project, the Harmony Family Success Center at PRAB, Rutgers Graduate School of Education, and The Collaborative Center for Community-Based Research and Service.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders through a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
