National Leap Into Science Week Family STEM Activity - Learn About Balance!

Join us for a workshop for families as we explore concepts of balance through Leap Into Science, a program engineered by The Franklin Institute to help audiences understand STEM concepts in a manner less interested in "right" and "wrong" and more interested in "how" and "why".

Balance is a crucial concept to learn about. While many of us understand it intrinsically in our bodies, making things outside the body balance is a skill that often has to be learned.

Families will have the opportunity to visit various stations set up around the library to learn about balance using everyday objects, teeter totters and even your own body!

Location: Spotswood Public Library – 548 Main Street, Spotswood, NJ 08884.

Audience: All Ages

Special instructions: This is a drop-in activity from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. No registration is required.

The Last King of Scotland - A Lecture by Natasha Himmelman

Join us as Natasha Himmelman facilitates a discussion about The Last King of Scotland (2006), with a particular focus on representations of Africa. A media literacy advocate, she poses questions about images, stereotypes, history and fiction, encouraging critical readings, understandings and interpretations of the film. She asks how we might imagine literacies that acknowledge and engage with the pleasures, leisure and entertainment that Hollywood films offer. And ultimately, she asks how we might apply such tools and perspectives in our everyday multi/social media lives.

Originally from in Spotswood, Natasha Himmelman is a Puerto Rican researcher and educator committed to media literacies that empower informed decision making and equip individuals and communities to fully participate in society. An ICS, Dartmouth College and University of Cape Town alum, she is currently a Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg’s Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre (VIAD) in South Africa.

Location: Spotswood Public Library - 548 Main Street, Spotswood, NJ 08884.
